Celebrating Black Philanthropy Month

Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) is an annual global celebration and concerted campaign dedicated to elevating African-descent giving and enhancing funding equity for Black-led organizations and communities. Founded by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland in 2011, BPM was established to inspire and engage more individuals and organizations in the movement toward equitable and impactful philanthropy. It serves as a powerful platform to highlight the critical role that Black philanthropy plays in advancing social change and justice while also addressing the significant disparities that exist in funding and resources.

The statistics speak for themselves:

  • Most Black-led nonprofits operate on less than $500,000, with nearly 1/3 having annual budgets of just $30,000.

  • 43.5% of Black-led nonprofits operate without any paid, full-time employees.

  • Black-led organizations have 76% less unrestricted assets than their white-led counterparts.

These disparities highlight a critical issue: racial justice cannot be achieved without economic justice. Black-led organizations are on the front lines, addressing the unique needs and challenges of their communities, yet they consistently receive less funding and support than their white-led counterparts. This inequity limits their capacity to scale, innovate, and sustain their work over time. The movement for funding and philanthropic equity is not just about leveling the playing field—it's about ensuring that Black-led organizations receive the resources they need to thrive and create lasting change.

This year's BPM theme, "AfroFutures of Giving," is inspired by Afro-futurism, a cultural aesthetic and philosophy that explores the intersection of African culture, technology, and the future. The theme aims to spark a movement across the United States and worldwide to imagine and co-create a powerful future for Black giving and equitable community finance. It's a call to action for all of us to envision a world where Black philanthropy is fully recognized, supported, and celebrated.

Here's how you can participate and make a difference:

  1. Use Your Voice: Use your platform to raise awareness about the work of Black-led nonprofits. Share their stories, achievements, and needs using the hashtags #BlackPhilanthropyMonth, #BPM2024, and #AfroFuturesOfGiving to be part of a growing movement. The more we talk about these issues, the more we can drive change.

  2. Offer Your Time and Skills: Many Black-led nonprofits operate with limited staff and resources. Your time, skills, or professional expertise can be invaluable. Whether you offer strategic advice, volunteer for an event, or help with fundraising, your contribution can make a significant impact.

  3. Financial Support: Consider donating to Black-led nonprofits, particularly those underfunded. Even small contributions can help these organizations continue their vital work. Consider setting up recurring donations to provide sustained support.
